Mid-Month Playlist | Discovery by Julia Walck

This playlist is good for: DISCOvering, Driving, Dreaming, Dancing, and Designing.

I've been getting into disco / deep house more and more lately; I think it sparked once I started listening to KCRW's Metropolis weekly. It airs on Saturday nights, but I play the episodes every Monday morning to get my design on at work.

There have been some great bands I've discovered through Metropolis, and venturing out into related artists on Spotify and Soundcloud

I spent this morning listening to "Discovery", and hand drawing some type to make a cover image (full cover below). I thumbed through some typography books for inspiration and started drawing. Rather quickly, the page of my sketchbook was filled to the brim and I couldn't choose just one! But hey, isn't discovery about exploring different options?

The Meaning of Thank·full by Julia Walck

Thank·full [pronounced ˈTHaNGkfəl/] adjective

  • expressing gratitude for those around you while stuffing your face with turkey and pie.

AKA how I feel about all of you. I hope you're with family eating a piece of pumpkin pie (or 5 pieces - no judgement) and are wearing the most comfortable sweat pants imaginable.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Saturday Night Sketches by Julia Walck

I snapped this shot back in February of the Huntington Library's Desert Garden Conservatory (favorite place). This really is the best place to go to see a huge variety of cacti and succulents.

This cactus in particular (drawn below) spoke to me the most. I don't know why, and you'll probably call me crazy, but this cactus reminds me of an angry New Yorker throwing their hands up at someone who most likely cut them off in traffic. Do you get that vibe? No? Just me?

Okay.

If You Give a Bird a Peanut by Julia Walck

This is Bob. I know his name because the worker in the Desert Garden Conservatory feeds him peanuts on the daily and calls him over using his first name.

Bob is a Scrub-Jay. These birds have such distinct colors about them... their white necks, and deep, azure blue feathers are beautiful.

I snapped this shot of Bob pre-peanut snack. He was being a bit of a ham posing for the camera, I just had to draw him!
